All Hallow's Eve is fast upon us: no sooner had we returned from our annual trip to Hudson, Ohio than it was time to carve this year's crop of pumpkins. Our neighborhood, which has many families with young children, is full of Halloween 'spirit.' Many years, around 100 children come to our door on Halloween.
This is the first year since moving to Menlo that we have 'regular' pumpkins: for the past 15 years we have found giant pumpkins to carve. The small pumpkins were more a schedule issue than a decision to roll back our neighborhood participation. You have to make time to visit a pumpkin patch to get the really big ones, and this year, full even by our standards, we made do with these 3 from Trader Joe's, purchased on the weekend between our return from China and Linda's departure for Orlando and my own to Hudson. Small pumpkins are easier to clean and handle, but harder to carve. They're small, so you have to be more careful...
